This thing is as accurate as could be expected. The buttons are for attenuation and they do no attenuation they add an offset to hte reading. For example the minimum reading the meter will give is about -75 dbm. If you are not comfortable with that scale you can add 75 to it so that it begins at 0 rather than -75. If you made that adjustment the meter would have a range, roughly of 0 to 90 rather than -75 to + 15. If you are not comfortable with the default scale you probably should not be using this device.
