This pack allows you to use AA alkaline or Ni-Mh rechargeable cells. One important note. If you use AA alkaline cells with the Uv-5R you must use a dummy (shunt) cell in place of one of the six cells or the radio will have too much voltage and not transmit. I run the radio for 5 or 6 hours then put in the one cell of the six you left out to put in the dummy cell and then you can use the radio until they are completely depleted. If you try to run it on five AA alkaline cells the radio will die after having used only half the capacity of the cells. This shell case will require trimming if used on the UV-5R variants that are not the original "square" case. Some choose to modify the radio rather than the battery however. This shell is made very well but care must be taken when opening the shell to install the cells you don't break the tabs at the bottom of the shell. Gently open the case and slide them apart. The tabs at the bottom of one half slide into slots in the bottom of the other and if you open the case too far it breaks the tabs off. You will then have to use a rubber band to keep the case together. This pack will not work with the new UV-5R variant the GT-3 at all. Steve NV7V
