This process turned out to be relatively painless. My receiver had no indication of which firmware was installed, so I simply went ahead and tried to connect in D16 mode. This did not work. 5 minutes later I had downloaded the latest firmware from frsky and upgraded the firmware to the lbt mode used on my European radio. the receiver so it immediately connected to the command radio.
